Improve Your WordPress Favicon In Three Basic Steps
A short while ago, I changed the WordPress favicon on my blog, so I thought I’d take a few minutes to teach you how you can change your favicon in 3 easy steps, even if you’re non-technical and don’t know a thing about coding.
Step 1: Create a WordPress Favicon For Use On Your Website
As you can tell, a favicon is actually just a fancy term for a tiny, square image that appears next to the address bar on your browser, so to start, you need a square graphic for your WordPress favicon. It’s important that the graphic you start with is square simply because the favicon is going to end up being 16X16 pixels and won’t look right when the dimensions aren’t equal on all sides. Make sense?
Begin by looking at www.Favicon.cc and upload your graphic by clicking “Import Image”. Once your WordPress favicon is done, you’re going to have to download it to your computer by clicking “Download Favicon” beneath the preview area (it’s easy to miss at first, but it’s right below the picture in the center of the page).
Here’s an important point: The filename needs to be saved as “favicon.ico”. The site automatically does that for you, so as long as you don’t rename it to something random, you should be alright.
Step 2: Add Your WordPress Favicon On The Website Using FTP
This can sound intimidating for some people, but it’s actually super easy to do. If you don’t currently have an FTP client, you are able to download Filezilla or several other programs for free to complete this task.
Now, you’re able to connect to your WordPress site using the FTP program by putting in your username and password. Once you’re connected to the server, locate the folder on the server named “public_html”. There’s miniscule chance it may be named something different, but I’ve rarely noticed it named anything different if you ask me.
Worst case, your webhost will be able to tell you how to get to your root directory if you get confused at this step, but trust me, this is actually very easy.
After opening your “public_html” folder, scroll down until you locate the folder that matches the url of your blog. This is your root folder for the site and the folder where you’re about to move a brand new favicon. Track down your new WordPress favicon on your computer, drag and drop it into the folder that matches your site name, and overwrite your existing favicon.ico file.
You should check to be sure this worked by going to “www.YourDomainName.com/favicon.ico”. If you see the new image, well done! Otherwise, be sure you put the file in the correct folder or clear the cache on your browser and try another time.
You are almost done!
Step 3: Install the Shockingly Simple Favicon Plugin to WordPress
Ordinarily, this step would entail editing your website’s header and adding some very simple code, but nobody really wants to do that when you can actually just use a WordPress plugin to add the favicon instead. Amirite?
After you install the Shockingly Simple Favicon plugin, open it up beneath the “Settings” box in your WordPress dashboard and be sure the favicon URL field is set for “www.PutYourDomainNameHere.com/favicon.ico” – or wherever on your server the file is situated, but this is the default and fastest way. Leave the Admin favicon box set at “default”, save everything, and you’re finished!
Now, whenever your visitors go to your blog, they’re going to find your brand new favicon looking them in the face and definately will marvel at how insanely magnificent you are.
